Fieldstone Guide to Mushrooms App Launch
Our partners at Fieldstone Publishing announced the launch of their latest iOS app, the Fieldstone Guide to Mushrooms—the latest in the company’s Fieldstone Earth series of apps dedicated to identifying and enjoying North America's rich diversity of wildlife.
An editorial team headed by Spot Check Editorial reviewed and updated the content featured in the app, which includes 700 color photos and text descriptions of more than 550 types of mushrooms found in North America, along with dynamic search functions based on characteristics used in field identification. The text in the app is based on the content of the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, published in 2000 by Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House LLC. Spot Check helped to revise the content to reflect current science, including updated taxonomic rankings.
“There is a lot of interest in wild mushrooms among nature enthusiasts, and modern science is rapidly expanding our understanding of the fungi kingdom,” says Jim Cirigliano of Spot Check Editorial, and the executive editor on the project. "We aimed to provide the most up-to-date information possible in our authoritative mushroom field guide app."
In 2018, Fieldstone Publishing unveiled its Fieldstone Earth series with the launch of 7 wildlife field guide apps covering Amphibians, Birds, Butterflies, Insects, Mammals, Reptiles, and Spiders. The content for these guides—prepared in collaboration with Spot Check Editorial—includes the full and updated text from the National Audubon Society Field Guides series (22 million copies in print) with supplemental information from the National Wildlife Federation Guides.

Feature Story for Drug Discovery News (DDNews)
Our executive editor Jim Cirigliano wrote a feature article in the January 2019 issue of Drug Discovery News magazine describing a global licensing and research collaboration agreement struck between Eli Lilly and Co. and Dicerna Pharmaceuticals Inc., announced at the end of 2018. The research will focus on discovery, development and commercialization of gene-silencing targets in the areas of cardio-metabolic disease, neurodegeneration and pain.
The researchers will use Dicerna’s proprietary GalXC RNA interference (RNAi) technology platform to attempt to target and silence—effectively "turning off" or suppressing—at least 10 specific genes known to cause disease. Gene silencing and RNAi represent a cutting edge of medical research that has the potential to treat a variety of diseases with well-validated but previously inaccessible drug targets. Several large pharmaceutical companies, including Lilly and Johnson & Johnson, are investing heavily in this field of research.

Feature Story for Sign Builder Illustrated
Our executive editor Jim Cirigliano wrote a lead feature article in the December 2018 issue of Sign Builder Illustrated magazine, describing a major restoration of the iconic Capitol Theatre in the heart of downtown Flint, Michigan. The writing project involved interviewing Dan Crannie, owner of Signs by Crannie—the contractor awarded the renovation work on the theater's signature marquee—and writing an original piece that provided practical advice to sign shops working on large outdoor signage, as well as offering an uplifting look at a sorely needed piece of restoration for the beleaguered city of Flint.

SEGFrames.org Site Launch
In 2018, the informational website SEGframes.org officially launched, populated with content generated in partnership with Spot Check Editorial.
Silicone Edge Graphic (SEG) frames are high-resolution graphics printed on fabric and finished with a thin silicone strip sewn around the edge, which can then be inserted into a custom aluminum extruded frame. The result is a graphic display with easily interchangeable, photographic quality imagery. This type of graphics system is one of the most rapidly growing trends in modular signage at events and in retail environments, among many others.
SEGframes.org seeks to educate customers about this type of signage, answer common application questions, and help customers to find qualified vendors for the components.
